Change That Waist Beads.

If there’s one thing that used to terrify me, it was the idea of change.
According to Merriam-Webster, some synonyms for “change” are transform, switch, and alter. The thought of any of these words alone was enough to make my palms sweat.

When I was younger, I was insatiably attached to the television. It was my comfort zone, my friend, and my favorite escape. I didn’t have any meaningful friendships during my teenage years except for the characters on screen. I still remember the day my aunties dropped me off at Ghana National College. The moment they left, I felt my world crumble. Why? Because I was being separated from my beloved companion, the television.

I went into full-blown panic mode at the thought of missing my favourite telenovelas: Passions, Esmeralda, La Supadora, and Acapulco Bay. If you grew up in the early 2000s, you know those shows weren’t just entertainment,  they were what united enemies for an hour and conversation starters! I simply couldn’t imagine life without them.

As I grew older and gained perspective, I began to ask myself,  why was I so afraid of change? The answer wasn’t external; it was within me. I was afraid of the unknown. I was afraid of leaving my comfort zone. I was afraid of what people would say about me. Afraid of not fitting in.

And because of those fears, many beautiful opportunities slipped right through my fingers. Looking back, I realize that most of the things we fear are not even real. Our minds create mirages,  illusions that keep us stuck where it’s safe but stagnant.

Another change that shook me to my core was relocating to the United States to be with my husband. At the time, my life in Ghana was steady. I had built momentum, found my rhythm, and knew exactly where to turn when I needed support. I had a sense of control over my life, and that mattered to me more than I realized.

Starting over in a new country felt deeply unfair and painfully disorienting. What many would call a dream come true felt, to me, like the ground was being pulled from beneath my feet. It took nearly seven years to make the decision to relocate, and even then, leaving felt like a slow surrender of everything familiar. I mourned the life I had built while stepping into one I did not yet understand.

With time, I came to realize that what felt like loss was also an opening. Life, it seems, had other plans quietly unfolding, even when I could not yet see them.

You see, change is inevitable. Some changes are beyond our control, but others are invitations  opportunities waiting for us to say yes.At one point in our business, Taltohma, we faced such a moment. Our clients’ preferences had evolved. They wanted more intimate, bespoke, and lifestyle-fitting waist beads  something beyond what the market offered. So, we changed. We refined our designs, restructured our model, and even tailored our wholesale services to meet those new desires. The shift wasn’t easy, but it was necessary.

And that’s the thing,  the process is beautiful, even when it’s painful. Sometimes change comes like a whisper; other times, it storms through your life with drums and lightning. But whether quiet or loud, it’s always pushing you somewhere you’re meant to go.

To recognize change, you must stay observant. Pay attention to what’s happening in your life  your relationships, your finances, your spirituality, your emotions. Awareness prepares you mentally and emotionally for those shifts that come without warning.

2025 taught me something profound: change doesn’t wait for you to be ready. But your willingness to embrace it will shape your future. Robin Sharma said it best ,“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.” I couldn’t agree more.

So yes, change those waist beads. Whether that means outgrowing old patterns, evolving your business, or simply daring to live differently until you let go, you’ll never know what could be.
